In this project, circus choreograph Marie-Andrée Robitaille investigates the historical semaphore network in the Baltic Archipelago, examining its role in navigation, communication, and defense, while drawing parallels to climate change and an ethics of movement. The semaphore, a precursor to modern digital communication, offers a compelling metaphor for the transmission of signals and information. By creatively reimagining these mobile architectures, Robitaille explores signs and signals through circus choreography. The new work explores the potential of circus art’s kinetic and aesthetic modes of transmission for addressing and steering the current ecological paradigm shift with a strong focus on evolving an ethics of movement. By engaging the local community in the creation and movement of semaphores, the project aims to foster a dialogue around climate change, ecological response, and collective action.

Semaphore Dialogue: Signals of Change is a part of Turning the Tide (TTT) a transformative European cooperation project, co-funded by Creative Europe, dedicated to exploring and addressing the pressing issue of climate change through the lens of artistic and cultural practices. Our project spans across four European cities, each facing unique challenges related to climate change, particularly in waterfront zones.
TTT is an ambitious artistic intervention and a transdisciplinary dialogue. TTT uses a cultural planning methodology and works with socially engaged artists to lead an international experiment that explores the potential contributions of artists and local communities, residents to the climate change narrative, and explores climate justice.

The TTT project includes 5 partner countries – Intercult (Sweden), Artit (Greece), Vienna Education Academy (Austria), DEAR HUNTER (Netherlands) and the Urban Culture Institute (Poland) in collaboration with Fablevision (Scotland) and the River//Cities Network.
